Science

At Meadowside, our vision is to nurture children’s natural curiosity so that they confidently ask questions and develop a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Through a practical, enquiry based curriculum, children will experience the joy of exploration and investigation. We believe that through these experiences, the children will understand the relevance of science to their lives now and in the future.

All teachers have a deep knowledge and understanding of the subject and plan lessons in line with National Curriculum objectives. Teachers also use cross curricular, inspirational ideas to involve children in their learning and provide memorable experiences which stimulate children’s creativity.

Our Intent:

  • To follow the progression of the National Curriculum for Science and the EYFS Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
  • To nurture curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do.
  • Give children a strong understanding of the world around them.
  • Encourage a respect for all living things and the environment.
  • To build a science curriculum which enables children to be enquiry based learners and results in the acquisition of scientific knowledge and skills.
  • To support children to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and in the future.
  • To teach methods of enquiry and investigation that stimulate creative thought and develop pupils’ enjoyment and skills.
  • To nurture independence and encourage children to ask questions about the world they live in.

Implementation:

  • A clear and comprehensive Long Term Plan in line with the National Curriculum, alongside cycles of lessons which carefully plan for progression and depth.
  • Teaching and learning plan for practical investigative opportunities within Science on a termly basis.
  • Additional support in place for SEN and disadvantaged pupils to enable them to access the curriculum at the appropriate level.
  • Knowledge organisers - children have access to key language and meanings in order to understand and readily apply to their written, mathematical and verbal communication of their skills.
  • Children reflect on previous learning, build on prior knowledge and link ideas together, enabling them to question and learn through enquiry.
  • Big Ideas topics are embedded with scientific enquiry skills and create opportunities for cross-curricular learning.
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy questioning is used in every classroom which covers six key question strands (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation) and encourages a greater depth of enquiry.
  • Specialist vocabulary is taught and built upon and effective questioning to communicate ideas is encouraged.
  • Concepts taught are reinforced by focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry, so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant questions.
  • All children access Forest School learning from a trained teacher in school and where objectives follow the National Curriculum progression documents.
  • Trips and visits from experts are provided to enhance the scientific learning experience.

Impact:

  • Children will retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context
  • Children will be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
  • Pupils will make links across various curriculum areas and use their scientific knowledge and skills to enhance work in English and Maths
  • Children talk positively about their learning in science.
