PE - Our Vision 

PE empowers children to excel in various activities, fostering high expectations of themselves individually, in groups, and as team players. Through sustained physical activity, children develop strong fitness levels and a deep understanding of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, promoting positive well-being. PE is inclusive and accessible to all, with opportunities for SEND and disadvantaged children to participate fully, while also providing avenues for competitive sports success.

Intent:

  • Children practise skills in a range of activities and to have the highest of expectations of themselves when performing these individually, in small groups and within a team.
  • Children develop high levels of physical fitness through being active for sustained periods of time.
  • Children understand the important of leading a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and healthy nutrition.
  • Children understand the importance of physical exercise for their positive well-being.
  • Children are advocates of PE and confidently talk about their achievements.
  • All children to be engaged in regular physical activity.
  • PE is inclusive and engages all children.
  • Opportunities to engage in physical activities are available to disadvantaged children.
  • Children have the opportunities to succeed in competitive sports.
  • Teachers have the appropriate CPD to support delivering effective and engaging PE lessons.
  • Children take part in a weekly outdoor learning session in the forest, as well as the one half a term weekly visit to Forest School.

Implementation:

  • Using an effective Long Term Plan for teachers to ensure pupils have access to broad range of physical activities.
  • Children participate in a minimum of 2 hours per week of PE lessons.
  • Active lessons and brain breaks are seen throughout school.
  • Bike riding lessons for all year groups to ensure that all children at Meadowside Academy are safe and confident when riding a bike.
  • Physically inactive pupils are identified and targeted for Change4Life clubs.
  • KS2 pupils as sports leaders deliver activities at lunchtimes and promote healthy living throughout school.
  • PE lessons will follow a structure of warm up, learning a skill, and an activity to apply the skill.
  • Pupil voice questionnaires to determine pupil; interests for future clubs.
  • Range of extra-curricular clubs on offer.
  • Children to participate in the Harrogate School Sports Partnership to allow all pupils to participate in competitions with local schools. This may be virtual.
  • Training for PE lead to be disseminated to all teachers.
  • Specialist coaches will lead sessions for each class both to inspire pupils and provide CPD for teachers who will continue the progression/embed the skills on the following session.
  • PE PDM’s to share resources and ideas.
  • Disadvantaged children are given the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular clubs at no cost to the disadvantaged child’s family. This may be clubs held at school or off site.
  • Questionnaire to teachers to determine CPD and children’s engagement in the Specialist PE sessions.
  • Encourage teachers to take part in outdoor learning.
  • Katie Brown, Forest School Specialist, to set up half term booking sheets to encourage teachers to use the wood area for outdoor learning.

Impact:

  • Children make progress in PE and enjoy participating in sport.
  • Children are physically active.
  • Children understand the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Children have increased confidence in a range of sports.
  • Children take up a variety of sports.
  • Children can talk confidently about PE and their learning.
  • Staff feel supported and confident to deliver PE lessons.
  • Children use the wooded outdoor area safely and with confidence. They feel encouraged to explore and fulfil curiosity. They are empowered in the natural environment, and aware of their surroundings. They use their motor skills and spatial awareness to engage.
